DIVISION OF NATURAL COMPOUNDS

The department developed from the Laboratory of Protein Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry in 1965. The first head of the department was corresponding member of USSR Academy of Sciences, Professor M.A. Prokofiyev.
Since 1985 the department has been headed by RAS member, Professor Aleksey Alekseyevich BOGDANOV.

The major fields of research of the department are organic chemistry of double-stranded nucleic acids and NK-protein complexes, study of the structure and functions of ribonucleoproteins using the chemical approaches.
There are 3 laboratories within the department. The total staff of the department is 42 employees including 1 RAS Academician, 2 RAS corresponding members, 12 Doctors of Science, 22 Candidates of Science and 30 postgraduate students. Every year there are about 20-25 diploma research papers completed at the department. The department is tightly connected with Belozersky Research Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology. The teaching staff of the department together with the three chemical departments of the institute form a associated teaching body. The department also provides a workshop on protein chemistry and chemistry of nucleic acids. The equipment for the workshop is provided by Belozersky Research Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology. The department has also developed close links with Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry where the students can have their practical training.
