Complexing and Growth of Nanoclusters in the Systems Metal-Mesogenic Cyanobiphenyl

Abstract

Complexation and formation of metal-organic nanostructures have been studied in thin film co-condensates of silver abd mesogenic cyanobiphenyls (CB): CnH2n+1C6H5-CN, wheren=5 (5CB), 8(8CB) CnH2n+1O-C6H5-CN, wheren=8 (8OCB) in the temperature range 80-350 K.The existance of sandwich Ag(CB)2 p-complexesn were shown by IR-,UV-vis and ESR data in combination with the results of quantu-chemistry calculations of model structures. Thermal degradation of the complexes at room temperatures led to the formation of nanosize (15-30 nm) silver clusters and their further aggregation and formation of anisotropic rod-like metal particles (with length more than 200 nm) stabilised in liquid crystalline matrix.
