Effects of organic solvents on bacterial bioluminescent reaction.

Abstract

The activating and inactivating effects of methanol, ethanol and acetone on the activity of luciferases from two types of luminous bacteria Photobacterium leiognathi and Vibrio harveyi was analyzed with kinetic graphic methods. The long-chain aliphatic aldehydes, e.g. decanal (C10), dodecanal (C12), tetradecanal (C14) were used as substrates of a different hydrophobicity. The kinetic analysis of inhibition and activation types indicated that the molecules of organic solvents could be bound to the active center of each of luciferases.
