Selective wetting of heterogenious surfaces by surfactant solutions

Abstract

Selective wetting of glass plates, treatment with dimethyldichlorosilane, by aqueous tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TDTAB) solutions in p-xylene medium was investigated. It was demonstrated that when surfactant concentrations were below CMC, contact angles of selective wetting increased with the growth of glass surfaces hydrophobisity. At concentrations above CMC contact angles were the similar on all surfaces investigated. The results obtained were explained by surfactant adsorptions at hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts of heterogeneous surfaces and by the stability of wetting films.
