Low
Proton Exchange in Water and in the Gas Phase
Abstract
For studying proton
exchange in water the technique of quantitative measurements of water has been
developed applicable for very low concentrations of water in solutions or at
low vapour pressure in a gas phase (for the maintenance of water at the level
of water of 1–10 mkg in 1 ml). In these conditions it is possible to
slow down the rate of proton exchange essentially. In particular, for mixtures
of vapours of H2O and D2O in the gas phase at low pressure the
life times of protons during exchange had the values of the order of 10–30
minutes. The life times were measured using gradual growth of intensity of the
signal of the mixed isotopomer HDO.
