Effect of oxygen on the chain reaction of sulfo group substitution for bromine in l-bromo-2-hydroxynaphthalene photosensitized by tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II)

Abstract

The influence of oxygen on the proceeding of the radical-ion chain reaction of sulfo group substitution for bromine in l-bromo-2-hydroxynaphthaIene in an aqueous sodium sulphite solution upon complex tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(H)-sensitized photolysis was investigated. It was found that at the presence of oxygen the increase of quantum yield of the photosensitized substitution reaction was observed. The mechanism of influence of oxygen on photoinitiation step is discussed. The length of chain of substitution reaction was estimated.
